Detecting Abuse

Protecting the vulnerable, reporting abuse.

The people we serve are often the most vulnerable in our county. Their protection comes before reputation, convenience or anyone’s position (Ezekiel 34:2–4).

“Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock… fierce wolves will come in among you.”
(Acts 20:28–29)

Our safeguarding standards

Separately governed

When a church cannot examine itself.

Our Safeguarding & Referral team handles serious allegations of abuse, exploitation, violence, sexual misconduct or financial predation in Christian settings, where a church may be unable, conflicted or unwilling to look objectively at its own (Ezekiel 34:10).

Our care ministries tend the wounded sheep. This team keeps watch for wolves, preserves the facts and places potential crimes in the hands of the authorities God has appointed (Acts 20:29–31; Romans 13:3–4).

  • No office creates immunity

Pastor, elder, staff, donor or member: no one is beyond scope, and status alone never creates suspicion. We do nothing from partiality (1 Timothy 5:21).

  • Independent by design

Investigators come from other churches, with no personal, pastoral, family or financial tie to anyone involved (Deuteronomy 16:18–19).

  • Seasoned and trustworthy

Heavily vetted Christians with backgrounds in law enforcement, investigation, safeguarding, prosecution or forensic accounting (Exodus 18:21).

  • Care kept separate

Those who comfort and shelter a victim are never the ones weighing evidence about the accused (Deuteronomy 1:17).

  • No police powers

No arrests, threats, covert recordings, hacking, entrapment, public accusations or blacklists. Ever (Luke 3:14).

  • Fair and biblical

Guilt is established on two or three witnesses (Deuteronomy 19:15; 1 Timothy 5:19). That protects the accused; it is never a reason to delay a required report.

  1. 1

    Receive

    Concerns received in confidence

  2. 2

    Report

Immediate reports wherever the law requires

  3. 3

    Preserve

Facts lawfully preserved, for and against

  4. 4

    Refer

A factual record handed to police

  5. 5

    Support

We assist the authorities, never compete

We decide no one’s guilt. That belongs to police, prosecutors and courts (Romans 13:4).

Serve on the safeguarding team.

We especially need former law-enforcement, investigative, safeguarding, legal and forensic-accounting professionals: capable, trustworthy people who hate a bribe (Exodus 18:21).
